Welcome to the CCCS Second Grade blog.
I will be using  this site to let you know what we are doing  for the week.  It can help you ask your child the big question “What did you do today?”  Now instead of “nothing” you can jump start the conversation with prior knowledge of the events of the week.  I hope this generates some great discussion at home about your child’s education.
The following is a tentative schedule  for the week of October 14-16.

Note*** This week 1/2 day Wednesday and conferences Wed. and Thursday.

Reading-  I am very excited about our new reading program.  It is filled with many wonderful pieces to help with the overall reading /writing process.   It includes phonics, spelling, vocabulary, English, writing,  handwriting, and of course comprehension.  Do to the large amount of great materials, I will be taking it a little slower and doing  about two days to their one day.  This means that the “week” for each unit will be longer.  I will use the extra time to be able to have small teacher lead groups and centers to build different skills.  For you this means that the spelling words of the “week”  will take longer to switch over to the next “weeks”  words.  Since they work with the words longer, hopefully this will make each spelling word a memorized word for life and not just to pass the test and forget.

Reading  theme of the “week” – Exploring  Desert using  Walk through the Desert story
Spelling – 14 new words each “week”
Spelling test

Phonics –  inflective endings (s, ed, ing)

English –  declarative and interrogative sentences

Handwriting – letters D, d

Writing - expository writing

Religion – prayer/10 Commandments

Science/Social Studies – We will alternate between science and social studies after each unit.
Science – Life cycles – frog and butterfly cycles
